Yesterday we attended the kids' Nature Festival to celebrate Earth Day and May Day. I had never gone to this particular school shindig before and I honestly wasn't planning to go this time. Our schedule is already so over packed that I try to keep things as low-key as possible by not adding extra activities. Besides, Doran had never shown much interest in these kinds of school activities in the past. That doesn't necessarily mean he didn't want to go, we just didn't think he cared too much one way or the other. The twins were also young and less vocal about such things. Well we all ended up going this year because Helena and Elijah insisted. All of their friends were going, it was an Earth Day celebration and we had to learn about recycling and reducing, and there were going to be birds of prey. We just couldn't miss that right?
So Greg met me, Helena, Elijah and Eden at the school. Doran went to the festival with his former aide and friend Sue. There were many activities. The kids were mostly interested in the treats and food of course. There was a wormery station, a May Pole, raffles, a seed planting booth, a second-hand book and movie table, and a table where one could build a solar powered car or boat - miniature of course. There were other tables we didn't even get to see. The third grade steel band played. One of Doran's current aides sang and played guitar.
Doran's favorite part was the brownies. He spotted them under all other sorts of treats in a half-closed box. Elijah really enjoyed the beekeeping exhibit and making a solar-powered race car with his dad. It was an incredibly windy day (almost like some of the winds in Kansas or a Georgia tornado) and the pieces were tiny. We lost one tiny piece in the grass never to be seen again while directions were whipped off the table and into the flowerbed (turns out there were 56 mph gusts, no wonder we kept losing necessary car parts). The environment was a challenging one, but Elijah was very proud, exclaiming, "Dad you're really good at this!"
Helena loved learning about the birds of prey and ways to help keep them safe. The children saw an owl, falcon and a hawk. Unfortunately we missed the turtle with the Lego prosthesis. We had to go. There was dinner to be made, homework to do all before bedtime. It was a pretty fun time. All of the money raised will go towards building a greenhouse for the school. So despite the disruption of the Sacrosanct Schedule, we had a wonderful time and we plan to go again next year.
Enjoy the weekend, and we hope to see you on Monday!
